Weekly Update 10.29.2008

He's such the stud.

He has this dog that used to be mine, but he FLIPS out anytime I get it out. I think there's something about the fur that gets him riled up, but man does he enjoy the company of the lime green fluffy.

And finally a couple of better pictures of my new bag. I've realized how hard it is to photograph this stuff - so I'll just tell you it's completely lined, with the inside and outside made of brown canvas, with the obvious accents of other fabric.

Thanks for all the feedback on the logo stuff - I'll post soon what the final decision was. It will be no surprise that I've changed my mind 80 times since I posted those, so it may look completely different than any of the images you saw originally.

I'm close to getting my etsy shop set up...I'll be sure to post the link when it's up and running. I took pictures of a bunch of cards this weekend and am VERY excited about this. Hopefully I can pull it together soon.
Not much else going on - just studying as usual, with some sewing in the small amounts of free time that I have. Ash finally got a new engine for his bike, so it will be up and running anytime now. Check out his blog (www.shugartmotorcyclemill.blogspot.com) for updates.
Hope you're week is going well - have a great weekend!

I need your help!

I need you to put on your consumer hat and let me know which one of the logos below is your favorite - which one appeals to you the most. If you need/want to see them bigger - click on the image.

So you're not wondering what this is for, it is for a store – selling paper goods and other handmade items.

Any and all input is appreciated!

Is that a picture?

Yes, yes it is....but not a good one.

Consider this a preview of my new bag. I took a picture with the iPhone just so I could redeem all of the photo-less blogs lately.

It's not quite done - I have to finish sewing on the straps, but then this thing will FINALLY be complete! I'll wait to give you all the details until I have the good pictures and completed bag to post.

On another note (I have a feeling this post will be very random), I read this on a blog this week and I really like it. I'm trying to get into the habit of making notes of things that inspire me on a daily basis - whether it's to write a blog about it, or jot it down on a post-it, I think inspiration can come from anywhere and it's unfair to ignore it.

"You may think you don't have talents, but that is a false assumption, for we all have talents and gifts, every one of us. The bounds of creativity extend far beyond the limits of a canvas or a sheet of paper and do not require a brush, a pen, or the keys of a piano. Creation means bringing into existence something that did not exist before—colorful gardens, harmonious homes, family memories, flowing laughter. What you create doesn't have to be perfect. Don't let fear of failure discourage you. Don't let the voice of critics paralyze you—whether that voice comes from the outside or the inside.

As you take the normal opportunities of your daily life and create something of beauty and helpfulness, you improve not only the world around you but also the world within you.

I believe that as you create beauty and as you are compassionate to others—God will encircle you in the arms of His love. Discouragement, inadequacy, and weariness will give way to a life of meaning, grace, and fulfillment."

It's taken me a long time to embrace the gifts God has given me. I never saw myself as an "artist" because I couldn't draw if my life depended on it. I'm realizing, however, being an artist doesn't require sketch notebooks - art is truly any creation that didn't exist before - I've never heard it put so beautifully.

I read a book review this morning (I'm telling you, my blog addiction is a serious problem) that I think hit the nail on the head.

An excerpt:

"In the introduction, Jane calls attention to something that I and I'd guess lot of women of my generation think seriously about every day--the choice many of us have between staying at home with family or going out into the workforce, or even doing both. She remembers that in the seventies (when I was born), feminism was mainstream again and young girls were being raised to have a greater sense of independence through career. To the feminist thinkers of the time, the domestic arts were a throwback to the days when women's lives were relegated to the home, and soon enough they became devalued as quaint and irrelevant. Having become a woman with both a professional and a domestic life, Jane reports that she sometimes felt embarrassed by her love of knitting, sewing, and baking and hid her creations, thinking she was alone in valuing these skills. Well, it's certainly clear by the publication of this book, the popularity of yarnstorm and other blogs like it, and the resurgence of craft circles and retailers that she isn't alone."

While I wasn't born in the 70's, growing up with a working mother and being surrounded by friend with working mothers, I grew up with the mentality that a being a career-woman was the only way to be. I'm by no means as "career-driven" as I used to be as I'm seeing there are so many things in life that are much more important. I have great respect for the women out there that have paved the road for women to have power in the workplace. I work hard for my job and do what I can to climb up this corporate ladder, but there's no telling what my stance on that will be come time for kids (a ways down the road). I am embracing my domesticity with each passing day and nothing gives me more enjoyment than spending 8 hours at a sewing machine and seeing something come together that was only a thought in my mind. There is definitely a huge wave of re-domestication in women taking place. I can't tell you the amount of people I talk to who are learning to sew - something that always seemed so antiquated is definitely a new love of mine. I love that the craft world is taking over and handmade goods are finally getting the recognition they deserve.

You know it's big-time when CNN takes note.

Kudos to you if you stuck around through that madness. Happy Thursday.

The City

So if you know me at all, you know I get sucked in to all the silly teeny-bopper shows (Gossip Girl, OTH, The Hills)….apparently I just don’t want to grow up.  I don’t think I can really explain my excitement over the new spinoff from “The Hills”….a new show, all about Whitney, “The City” (original name guys).  While these shows are so silly and I don’t think I could pay Ash to watch them with me, I sure do love every minute.

Yes I know they’re scripted.  Yes I know how much money these girls make for doing NOTHING.  Yes I know it’s complete and absolute absurdity.

But…I luuurve them.

If there is one person that I think actually appears intelligent on The Hills, it has always been Whitney.  Now based on the previews for her show, that could go down the toilet quickly, but she’s gorgeous and – I’ll say it – I want to be Whitney Port.

It’s the small things in life….and if it is adding one more 30 minute show to my Tivo’s to do list, then sign me up.

Update - 10.20.2008

The cousin got onto me again for my lack of updates.  I told her I have so much to blog about, but just no time to take pictures, edit them, and get them posted.

A quick run-down of what’s been going on:

1.        Took my 3rd test for the CPA…felt the best on this one than I have on the other two so I hope that’s worth something.  It’s been rough studying for all of this, but I truly feel like I’m on the downhill side of everything.  If all goes well, I’ll be done at the end of January with this…just in time for busy season.

2.       Had a trip to Delaware last week for work.  It was a great 4-day getaway.  The job I was on did not require a ton of extra time, so I truly had some down time.  They put us up in this crazy-swanky hotel so I decided just to enjoy the amenities, with a trip to H&M of course, and just clear my head.

3.       In case you didn’t know, which I haven’t been too open on here about it, Ash has been without a job since August.  Things were pretty rough and depressing, but we truly saw God’s faithfulness in everything.  We were able to pay all of our bills (without a steady income, you tell me how that works if it isn’t a God-thing) and if nothing else, we realized just how good we have it.  Things could be a lot worse and we’re truly grateful for the live we have.  As of now, there is still no permanent job.  He’s “working” for a friend right now, not as an official employee but as a hopeful one.  There is income, which is good, but still no certainty for the future, which is really taking its toll.  I know Ashley is not a planner, but I know it is wearing him out to just not know.  Please keep him in your prayers – just for strength and faith.   I know it will all work out and for whatever reason, God has brought us to this point and he will get us through it.

4.       I’m SO ready for some fall weather.  I was excited to go to Delaware, thinking I would get a fall preview with some cooler weather.  Not only was it unusually warm up there (high 70’s) a cool front went through Dallas while I was gone, so I completely missed the cooler weather…bummer.  I love the sweaters, jackets, tights, and everything in between, that comes with fall/winter.  Let’s get in the game Texas.

5.       We are going to a Halloween party this weekend…should be a good time.  I’ll make sure there’s pictures, but based on my history, it’ll be a while before you see them.  I’ll do my best to just get at least one so you can see our costumes…they’re going to be good.

6.       Worked on a new bag yesterday – got down to attaching the straps and my machine decided it was done for the evening.  I probably could have finished it, but I was getting so frustrated, I just needed to walk away.  It is coming together nicely, and has the potential to be my favorite bag yet.

I think that about covers any updates right now – not a whole lot going on.  Getting geared up for the holidays (Christmas is my favorite…Mariah Carey what?) and just ready for some decisions to be made.

I’m going to quit promising pictures, so you’ll just be pleasantly surprised when they show up!

Have a great week.

Anyone want to buy this oufit for me?

So I love this site - you can dream up outfits and actually find everything you're looking for AND money is no object. Only in a perfect world my friends. I had a lot of fun on this one, and I only had about 10 minutes to do it. I can see an addiction forming. If you get the wild hair to partake, let me know...I would love to see it!

By the way, I think I have a mild obsession with these bright tights this year.

Very Bizarre

So I’m reading through my Google reader, as I do every day, and one of the blogs had a post about lace.  This post included various things such as jewelry, clothes, decorations, etc.  Well they had a link to an etsy shop with a lace dress and who is the model in the picture??  Eugena from ANTM.   Really?  On Etsy?  So I hop on over to the shop, and find Anya as well!  I just found it very weird that these two girls, who were either runner-up or 2nd runner-up on different cycles, are showing up on Etsy.  Not sure if that means Etsy is big-time or if ANTM really does nothing for these girls.

There is your completely useless post for the day.

Have a good weekend.

Weekly update - October already?

Man, the hits just keep coming.

My BFF told me yesterday that one day I will get a break….one day.

We are still rocking along, if you can call it that.  We are challenged daily but have also seen God’s answered prayers in the past week.

Smalls had a huge allergy attack.  We’re talking green goo oozing out of his eyes non-stop.  Once we implemented the children’s Benadryl 3x daily, he seems to be doing better.

Stone started dry heaving last week…also non-stop.  He’s now on two pills, that have to be given at least an hour apart.  That makes for chaotic mornings trying to get him out of bed.  Talk about high-maintenance dogs…but I sure do love them.  We have spent a ton of time at the Dog Park in the past few weeks.  Met some great people and just fueled the desire for another mutt.   Some people get baby fever, I get puppy fever.

Work is getting crazy already.  I’m headed to Delaware in a week and a half for about 5 days.  I’m not thrilled about going out of town for my one week between CPA sections, but maybe a little time away will help.  I get to stay at a pretty nice hotel AND there’s an H&M AND no sales…I’ll try to make the best of it J

I made a new dress for the fabulous engagement party this weekend – I will post pictures soon.  I know blog posts without pictures are lame posts, so I apologize.  It may be after thanksgiving, but I will get you caught up with pictures.  I will have a small break over the holidays from all the CPA mess…so I’m definitely looking forward to that.

Quite honestly, life is pretty depressing right now, but we will make it through.  We know a lot of people are going through really hard times, so it’s good to know we’re not alone.

My good friend, Adrienne, sent me a verse a couple of weeks ago:

Joshua 1:9

“This is My command, be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

And then she said “it is a daily reminder when crap hits the fan”…so true but I definitely found my strength in that.   Thanks A J

I’m hoping to update with pictures soon…it’ll be next weekend most likely as my next test is Wednesday October 8 so I’ll be in hibernation until then.

Have a happy hump day and a good weekend.
